Bio:

Dr. John Tracy was recently named the director of the Texas Water Resources Institute. Prior to coming to Texas, he served as director of the Idaho Water Resources Research Institute for 11 years and associate vice president for Research for six years, and was a faculty member in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Idaho. Dr. Tracy works with a wide range of faculty members to develop and forward research initiatives that address pressing water resources issues in arid and semi-arid regions of the western United States.

Over his career, Dr. Tracy has worked in the areas of environmental restoration, watershed planning, hydro-systems analysis and water resources management in a wide variety of western watersheds, including the Arkansas River, South Platte River, Lake Tahoe, Snake River and the Northern Plains Regions. His recent work has focused on the development and integration of research programs to effectively inform water resources management and policy. As a Research Administrator he works with private, state, regional and federal entities in the development of research programs that more effectively support their water and environmental resource management objectives. In addition, Dr. Tracy has led research initiatives on developing sustainable resource management practices for a number of water resource and environmental systems.

Dr. Tracy currently serves on the governing board for the American Water Resources Association as president, and the Executive Management Board of the National Institutes for Water Resources as their secretary/treasurer. He also served on the governing board of the University Council on Water Resources and was its President in 2008-2009. Prior to his work at the University of Idaho, Dr. Tracy held academic positions at Kansas State University (1989 to 1992), South Dakota State University (1992 to 1996) the Desert Research Institute (1997 to 2004), where he also served as the Executive Director of the Center for Watersheds and Environmental Sustainability from 2000-2004. Dr. Tracy received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering at Colorado State University in 1980, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering at the University of California at Davis in 1986 and 1989 respectively.
